Fresh Art by Kristen Hamilton
Picture
In everyone’s life there are moments of synchronicity; something happens that was meant to be,  seemingly by chance.  The event marks a shift in thinking, feeling, and /or behaving.

In my life a substantial shift happened when in college, the watercolor instructor went on sabbatical.  Lucky me! The adjunct instructor was a quirky hippie dude who wore a hat adorned with peace signs and Christmas ornaments.  This guy was a water media genius; his own artwork was the most interesting use of watercolor I’d been exposed to, a combination of dynamic fluidity and ultimate color schemes. That teacher's name was Bob Bosworth, turns out he was not only an outstanding painter, he was also an award winning architect.

Bob insisted we stand up while painting, he told us he didn’t want to see any “pretty pictures.”  He encouraged us to simply experiment,  see what the media could do in a variety of contexts. I learned to pour, wet in wet!  Such freedom for a small town girl, mostly unfamiliar with abstract art.

And that was it. The turning point marking my love affair with abstraction.

Thank you, Mr. Bosworth!  To this day I can’t sit down while painting.  Though I may use a mix of water media, I especially love liquid acrylics because they allow such intensity of color.

Inspired , I went on to earn a BFA at Southern Oregon University.  I later earned my MA in Art Therapy at Marylhurst University, combining my love of art, social justice, and the celebration of humanity.
